Dr. David Hughes, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church on Fifth, has been the spiritual leader of FBC for 20 years. David is devoted to creating a church home where followers can be part of an inclusive community of loving people who love God with all their hears and their neighbors as themselves. He believes that the FBC family is commissioned by Jesus Christ to extend our “family of faith” outward, to inspire others to be drawn into our circle of love. Toward that end, David creatively communicates the “gospel” through his passion for preaching, teaching, leading and engaging members, guests and the community at large in spiritual formation. His life’s work revolves around sharing the good news that God loves us and wants to give us abundant, eternal life through Jesus Christ. David loves the message of hope in Matthew 11:28-30; “Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Under David’s leadership, FBC sustains many missions and outreach initiatives for the local community as well as global concerns.
David received his Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and Ph.D. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife of 37 years and best friend, Joani, have three children, Tim, Molly and Kevin.

The Reverend David Williamson has been Minister of Worship and the Arts at First Baptist Church on Fifth as since 1998. One of David’s best loved Scriptures among many favorites is Psalm 139 which reminds us of God’s intimate presence in our lives.
David’s ministry focus, Worship and the Arts, grew out of his desire to use art as a tool for spiritual formation and worship. His leadership has helped bring about special arts related programming like the Open Doors Art Classes and exhibits featuring photography, sculpting, and oil painting. During his ministry at FBC, David has conducted numerous special musical performances such as the annual “Feast of Carols” Christmas concert. For the past ten years David has served as the Chorus Master of the Messiah Community Chorus for Winston-Salem’s annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah performed at Reynolds Auditorium.
David earned a Bachelor of Music from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and a Master of Music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

Though it is early in Reverend Keith Stirewalt’s career at First Baptist Church on Fifth, FBC has made great strides from his leadership. As Associate Pastor of Administration and Community Ministries, Keith pulls from his formal training and experience in the worlds of business, medicine, and pastoral care as he works as a catalyst for the church’s operations. Keith works closely with the church’s administrative, maintenance, and children’s center staff as well as a number of church committees.
He approaches the sometimes daunting task of overseeing the day-to-day operations and needs of a large church family and a historic building needing loving attention with energy and humor. His faith springs from Scripture that says “If I say ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night’, even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.” It is his goal to share that light with others.
Keith received his theological training and a Master of Divinity at Wake Forest University School of Divinity, his Master of Business Administration from the Bryan School of Business at UNC-Greensboro, and graduated from the Physician Assistant program at Wake Forest University. Additionally, Keith completed seven units (two plus years) of specialized chaplain internship and residency.
He is the married father of three, plays the ukulele and banjo and loves bluegrass music. He especially loves playing acoustic music with his two sons and wife.

Brent’s favorite Scripture can be found in Galatians 5; “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control… since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” As Minister of Spiritual Formation for the Children and Adult Ministries, Brent’s leadership is grounded in seeking to know God and applying faith practices that lead to transformation from the Holy Spirit. He enjoys helping First Baptist Church family grow in their faith and seeks to help them utilize their spiritual gifts and talents to impact God’s Kingdom. Much of the spiritual formation programming that takes place at FBC is brought about by this commitment to his “family of faith”, including bible study groups, encouraging families with discipleship resources and introducing spiritual practices along with providing retreat opportunities.
Being involved in children’s advocacy is also very important to Brent. He is an IEP Parent Partner with the Exceptional Children’s Advocacy Center of NC, a SmartStart of Forsyth County Board Member and a public education school volunteer. He and his wife, Martha, have been foster parents.
Brent received his theological training at Gardner Webb University and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he received his Master of Divinity. Brent and Martha are proud parents of three children.

The Reverend June Foss, Minister with Senior Adults at First Baptist Church on Fifth since 2000, and the group leader for the Pryme Times, finds much to learn and enjoy from time spent with older adults. She feels that, as people with life experiences that have caused them to both question and grow in their faith, they have much wisdom to share of their ongoing love and devotion to our creating, redeeming and sustaining God. June brings energy and devotion to the development and planning of the informative, fun and inspiring activities, trips and events available to the older adult community of FBC.
June’s specific foci of ministry are senior adults, pastoral care and counseling and spiritual formation. In addition to her ministry at FBC, she is a licensed marriage and family therapist and serves as an adjunct clinician at Trinity Center, a local Christian counseling center. Her attitudinal approach toward those she serves is influenced by Ephesians 1; “...I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.”
June is married to Steve and they have two adult children, Jack and Lindsey.

Terri Springer was ordained and has served at First Baptist Church on Fifth as Minister to Students leading the Pulse Student Ministry, since 1999. She was called to ministry during her undergraduate days at Indiana University where she studied Recreation Programming and Leadership. After spending three summers at a youth camp, she knew her heart was in working with young people. She went on to complete her Seminary work at Southern Seminary and served at two churches before coming to FBC.
Springer’s favorite scripture, Ephesians 3:20, and the message, God can do the unimaginable — beyond our wildest dreams — by working gently through His spirit which lies deep within us, has resonance for her. She finds fulfillment in working with the youth of FBC, walking alongside them in their spiritual journey. She is devoted to being with the students, from the time they are small through their challenges and mileposts of life leading up to young adulthood, and seeing how God works in them and in their lives, as they grow in their relationship with Christ.
Terri has lived in Winston-Salem with her husband, Randy, and three children, Sherman, Harper and Hallie since relocating here in 1997.
